I've been seeing a lot of NaNoWriMo peeps thinking they're jerks for not meeting word count. Some have dropped out, some are in the midst of panicked self-flaggelation.
Welcome to The Real NaNoWriMo
Today is Day 10, which means the words should be at about 17,000.
So let's take a look at me, shall we?
-I'm behind on my revisions for the November-Book-That-Has-Turned-Into-The-December-Book.
-I'm behind on my NaNoWriMo word count (11,300 out of 17,000 for The Tenth Day).
-I'm behind at refreshing book covers and innards for a sale I'm having Thanksgiving Weekend and an author panel I'm part of 12/6.
-I probably didn't proofread this blog to perfection.
I could say that I will double down--create MORE words revise MORE chapters and think myself a failure while doing so.
My motivation for such a crazed act would be this:
But as I wrote and revised and worked on The Writing Life at levels that weren't perfect, I was doing this:
![]() |
Walking in the evening with a lovely neighbor thru the college campus |
![]() |
Taking children to get their haircut and waiting a squirmy hour |
![]() |
And yes, I did plenty of this. |
I do this a lot more than I used to in my 20s. Or pre-kids. |
And bolstering myself with lovely, imperfect cold-weather beverages like this one:
![]() |
Marshmallows with a splash of hot chocolate |
And holding close to what I HAVE been doing in my writing world:
-Writing eleven thousand three hundred new words for a new book.
-Being on Draft 3 of a novel. That means I've combed through 150,000 words so far.
-Building reader relationships with lovely readers via Goodreads Giveaways, my newsletter, and blog hops:
-And today, creating a new Pinterest board for moments like this (Imperfect But Me):
Follow Sydney's board Imperfect But Me on Pinterest.
No, I wasn't procrastinating.
I was celebrating this:
Make sure you're celebrating
your imperfect awesomeness, too.
What Unsung Accomplishments do you have
because they aren't the perfect accomplishments you wanted?
Until next time, my darlings my dears...
